Integration of CCTV Cameras and AVoIP System for Interrogation Training Center in UK

Interrogation room

Overview

To effectively gather evidence and information for criminal proceedings, the UK police department provides professional training such as PACE (Police and Criminal Evidence) and ABE (Achieving Best Evidence) to its officers. The training equips officers with the following skills to enhance the interrogation process:

– Techniques to effectively maximize memory recall.
– Understanding the key differences between suspect and witness interviews.
– Utilizing the PEACE/ABE model to manage interviews effectively.
– Various questioning techniques.
– The application of an interview under caution in both criminal and civil law contexts.

Challenge

The department planned to construct a training system comprising four training rooms and three classrooms.

Each training room is equipped with two AHD cameras—one fixed and one pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ)—and a stereo microphone that enables trainers to communicate with trainees in various classrooms. Meanwhile, each classroom contains a large-format monitor with HDMI input and a PTZ camera controller. Trainers from any of the three classrooms must be able to display feeds from any of the four training rooms, with the two cameras from the chosen room appearing as picture-in-picture (PIP) and utilize an RS485 pan-tilt controller to operate the camera in the selected room.

Distributed A/V System

An A/V system comprises various sources and displays, usually requiring a matrix switcher to direct videos to different screens. However, AVoIP technology offers a superior solution for creating a distributed A/V system. It provides significant flexibility and scalability, allowing for the expansion of sources and displays over time.

The system integrator installed four HKM02BT-4K transmitters for AHD cameras and three HKM02BR-4K receivers for HDMI input monitors. They also included a 1G Ethernet switch in the setup, enabling trainers and trainees to seamlessly switch their desired video feed across four training rooms.

AHD Camera to HDMI

At the camera end, AHD cameras require conversion to HDMI signals for integration with the AVoIP system. The AD001HD4-4K is an ideal solution for this purpose. It connects to an AHD camera through the input port and utilizes the loop-out port to link another camera, converting both AHD signals into HDMI. When two videos are present in the converter, the PIP function can be activated to fulfill the project’s requirements.

‍Audio Integration

The AD001HD4-4K features a built-in audio input for connecting a CCTV microphone, converting the audio from AHD to an HDMI signal, and ultimately transmitting it to the classroom’s audio system via IP. This audio capability enhances the efficiency and smoothness of communication across different spaces.

Pan-tilt-zoom Control

Every classroom necessitates a controller for adjusting the PTZ cameras across four distinct rooms. The RS001, an RS485 to RS232 bi-directional converter, enables these controllers to integrate with the AVoIP system, facilitating the operation of the PTZ camera in the chosen room.
